Equipment

  • Grid: 3 ft × 3 ft playing surface divided into 9 equal squares
  • Whale Sacs: 12 total (6 per player, each player using a distinct color or pattern)
  • Throw Line: Green - 15', Red - 20', Blue - 25', Gold - 30'

Objective

Be the first player to win two rounds in a best-of-three match. Win a round by getting three of your Whale Sacs in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Gameplay

Starting the Game

  • Players determine who throws first (disc flip, coin flip, rock-paper-scissors, etc.)
  • Players alternate throws from behind the throw line throughout the round

Making a Throw

  1. Player must release the Whale Sac from behind the throw line
  2. A Whale Sac is in bounds if any part of it touches inside a square (similar to disc golf—if it breaks the plane, it counts)
  3. If a Whale Sac lands out of bounds (OB), there is no penalty—play simply passes to the next player

Capturing Squares

  • When a Whale Sac lands on a square already occupied by an opponent's Whale Sac, the new Whale Sac captures that square
  • The opponent's Whale Sac is removed from the grid
  • The capturing player now controls that square

Winning a Round

  • The first player to align three Whale Sacs in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins that round
  • Block Attempt: After one player achieves three in a row, the opponent gets one final throw to attempt a block
    • If the blocking throw successfully lands on one of the winning squares (replacing the opponent's Whale Sac and breaking the three-in-a-row), the round continues
    • If the block attempt misses or lands out of bounds, the round ends and the winning player scores the round

Match Victory

  • The first player to win two rounds wins the match

Line Calls

When a Whale Sac lands on a line between two or more squares:

  • If the Whale Sac is touching more than one square or not touching any squares, and is in bounds, then the player takes a mulligan (re-throw)
  • Tiebreaker: If the position is too close to call, players may agree to a mulligan (re-throw)

Etiquette

  • Players should call their own Whale Sac out of bounds when clearly OB
  • Respect your opponent's throws—no distractions or movement during their release
  • In disputed line calls, give your opponent the benefit of the doubt or agree to a mulligan
  • Have fun and keep the spirit of friendly competition!
